Born and raised in Michigan and an alumna of The University of Michigan, Jan is currently a faculty member in the College of Educational Studies' Secondary Education Program where she teaches content area literacy.  Prior to coming to Chapman, Jan taught English in secondary public schools in Los Angeles and Orange counties, community colleges in Michigan and California, and at State Prison Southern Michigan.

Believing that critical literacy theory provides a frame for understanding school as an arena of social justice, Jan focuses her work on student empowerment through literacy.  She is currently in the Ph.D. Program in Curriculum and Development at The University of California, Riverside.  She is conducting research in freshman rhetoric and composition.
