New Grads are Exam Champs!

Class of 2010 Trounces the Average BOC Pass Rate

Here's more evidence that Chapman ATEP graduates excel beyond the national average: 16 out of 16 from the class of 2010 passed the Board of Certification (BOC) exam. 14 of this class passed on their first attempt. Our first-attempt pass rate ATEP graduates(87.5%) continues to greatly exceed the national average of approximately 50%.

The class of 2010's stellar performance continues the CU ATEP tradition. Since fall 2002, 88% of all Chapman AT graduates have passed the BOC exam– the majority of them doing so with their first attempt. Success with the exam is also linked to placement in graduate schools and employment, which we also track. More than 90% of CU ATEP graduates since 2002 have been accepted to graduate schools and/or secured jobs.

The College of Educational Studies is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Jason Bennett as its Athletic Training Education Program Director, effective June 1, 2010. This promotion is the culmination of eight years of excellence in teaching, scholarly activities, advising and service to the athletic training profession, as well as to the university. Dr. Bennett was also awarded tenure and promoted to Associate Professor this past spring.

The ATEP's former director, Dr. Ky Kugler, has been promoted to Associate Dean of the CES. On March 23 ATEP faculty and students traveled to Sacramento to advocate youth sports safety by educating their legislators regarding AB 1647 The Catastrophic Athletic Injury Prevention Act of 2010. If passed, this critical legislation would establish guidelines to help prevent student athlete deaths and catastrophic injuries caused by heat illness, sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), and second impact syndrome following concussion– all at little to no cost to the taxpayers. Additionally it would finally protect the title of athletic trainer. Currently, California is one of only three states that do not regulate the practice of athletic training.

ATEP alumni

On November 18 the ATEP hosted a special event to celebrate the past, present and future of our program.

Faculty, staff, and students were joined by Chapman President Jim Doti, College of Educational Studies Dean Donald Cardinal, and more than 40 program alumni to celebrate the ATEP’s recent 10-year re-accreditation. Alumni were recognized for their achievements during the unveiling of the Monte Smith Wall of Fame. Alumni provided career and networking advice to current AT students.

Additionally, the founder of Chapman's ATEP, Monte Smith, was honored with an endowment in his name to support student education. Monte’s daughter, Vana Smith Surmanian, shared memories of Monte’s pioneering days at Chapman and remarked that her father is very proud of the program's tremendous growth and achievements. The event raised more than $3,500 for the fund. Want to contribute? Make a pledge today.

NATA President Visits Chapman

Chapman University's College of Educational Studies and its Athletic Training Education Program hosted the president of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association September 9.

Marjorie Albohm, MS, ATC, LAT, joined an open forum that drew nearly 120 students, faculty and clinical instructors from several local athletic training education programs.

Albohm, one of the first six women in the United States to become a certified athletic trainer, discussed future directions of the athletic training profession, including emerging practice settings such as the military, performing arts, public/civil service sectors and extreme sports. Touching on national health care reform, Albohm contends that athletic training – particularly with its emphasis on prevention – will flourish. “There will be increasing need for athletic trainers serving as physician extenders in primary care and as triage experts, as well as in cash-pay settings. People are willing to pay for what works.”
