Athletic Training Education Program Mission

The mission of Chapman University’s Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) is to provide a personalized, comprehensive and contemporary health care education that focuses on the physically active.  Chapman University's ATEP combines foundational instruction in functional anatomy and the prevention, treatment, evaluation, management and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses in an environment that fosters critical thinking and problem solving skills.  Chapman University's ATEP prepares students for successful completion of the Board of Certification (BOC) exam and rewarding careers as allied health care professionals.

 

Program Goals:

 

§     To prepare students for successful completion of the BOC Certification Exam

§     To produce highly qualified, ethical and professional certified athletic trainers for employment in diverse allied health settings

§     To provide direction and assistance for students seeking entrance into graduate school

§     To foster an appreciation for the contribution athletic training makes to the field of sports medicine as an allied health profession

 

Program Objectives:

 

Graduates of Chapman University’s ATEP will acquire the knowledge, demonstrate the skills and possess the professional values required of entry-level, board certified athletic trainers in order to:

 

§     identify potential injury and illness risk factors to plan, implement and evaluate risk management and prevention programs

§     assess, provide immediate care and appropriately refer acute and chronic injuries and illnesses

§     understand physiological aspects of human growth and development, as well as injury and disease processes and responses

§     recognize diet and nutritional aspects of their practice and refer athletes/patients/clients for professional nutrition consultation when appropriate

§     recognize and appropriately intervene and/or refer psychological and/or social issues of athletes/patients/clients under their care

§     manage pharmacologic applications, including indications, contraindications and precaution interactions in accordance with all applicable federal, state and facility regulations

§     plan, implement, document and evaluate the efficacy of therapeutic modalities and exercise programs for the rehabilitation/reconditioning of acute and chronic injuries

§     develop, manage and evaluate the efficacy of a health care facility and associated venues providing athletic training services

§     assume professional responsibility and pursue avenues of professional development at the local, state and federal levels to promote athletic training as an allied health care discipline to professional colleagues and the general public
