Barbara Hubert, Director

Barbara Hubert joined the Career Development Center summer of 2004. Previously, she was the Director of Career Planning and Field Experience Programs at Skidmore College in upstate New York for almost eight years. She holds a Master's degree in Counseling from Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia and an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Education from Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Hired as a Training and Program Development Specialist for a career management and job search organization, Barbara was selected to become Acting Executive Director just over a year later. Other work experience includes positions as a training manager for a professional association, a senior consultant for both an information technology and an e-learning company, a career consultant to the human resources manager of a corporate client, and a success coach for a non-profit organization providing adults and teens with job readiness training. An enthusiastic and resourceful professional, Barbara's passion is to assist students and alumni in the self-discovery, career exploration, and job search process.

Ilyana Marks

As Assistant Director and Internship Coordinator, Ilyana provides the Career Development Center (CDC) with program development, assessment, and student support. Internship services include assistance to students in the registration and completion of internship commitments, support to Chapman University (CU) faculty and internship advisors, and collaboration with the greater campus community. Ilyana holds a Masters of Arts in Student Counseling and is currently a candidate for a MA in Education Leadership, both granted from CU School of Education. She has more than 15 years of service in the field of education and has been part of the Chapman community for more than 5 years. Committee membership includes the Orange County Vital Link career exploration and curriculum committees as well as the CU Guardian Scholars committee. Ilyana's academic, volunteer, and research interests were inspired by mentorship to foster youth preparing emancipation, post-secondary education, and career success. Teacher's College Press recently published a chapter contributed by Ilyana in Other Kinds of Families: Embracing Diversity in Schools. She joined the Career Development center in 2008 and looks forward to assisting the CDC team in offering students and employers world class services and opportunities.

Sandra Hague, Career Outreach Manager

Sandra Hague oversees employer relations, student outreach and recruiting activities such as career fairs, accounting recruiting, employer tables and conducts a variety of career-related workshops.  Prior to coming to Chapman in 2003, she ran the On-Campus Interview Program at the University of California, Irvine, where she assisted graduating seniors in obtaining full-time employment.  She also assisted in coordinating and organizing career fairs, and welcome week activities.  Sandra has extensive background in Youth Employment Services with The City of Irvine and The San Mateo County Office of Education.  A graduate of California State University, Long Beach, Sandra majored in psychology.  Recently, she completed a Masters degree in Organizational Leadership from Chapman University College.  She is an active member of MPACE (Mountain Pacific Association of Colleges and Employers), and CLASIC (Consortium of Liberal Arts Schools and Independent Colleges), where she was recently elected to the executive board.  Sandra will hold the position as CLASIC Program Director until spring 2008.  Her primary responsibilities will include coordinating activities for the group's annual meetings and working directly with board members to increase participation.  

Jean Lawson, Department Assistant

Jean Lawson joined the Career Development Center in August 2004. She brings to Chapman University extensive experience in the areas of student relations and office management. She worked in educational institutions for over eight years, and corporate administrative office work for over four years. Jean received her Business Administration degree from California State University, Fullerton in 1980 and resides in Orange, CA with her family.

Gale Sorensen, Career Counselor (part time)

Gale Sorensen came to Chapman University in January of 2006.  She brings to the Career Development Center over 20 years of career counseling, teaching, and administrative experience from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.  Gale's passion is working with students and alumni to identify and reach career goals.  She believes in empowering individuals with the process of self-assessment, decision-making, and job search so they can effectively use these skills throughout their lives.  With her creativity, ability to connect with students and extensive counseling skills and experience, she is a great resource for students.  Her background includes a Masters degree in Counseling and Bachelors degree in Communications both from California State University, Fullerton.  She enjoys international travel, backpacking, and creative/artistic activities. 

Sharon Mathis-Curd, Career Counselor (part time)

Sharon Mathis-Curd joined the Career Development Center in the fall of 2006.  She recently retired after 30 years of service in the Career Center at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona.  While there, she received the STAR Award – Student Affairs Recognition Award for dedication to students and the student affairs division.  Since she is so passionate about working with students, Sharon decided to continue working part time.  This allows her to still spend time with her family and the joy of her life – her granddaughter!  A graduate of California State Polytechnic University with a B.A. in Behavioral Science, Sharon earned a M.S. in Counseling for California State University, Fullerton.  As a career counselor, she assists student in identifying, developing and implementing career planning goals, strategies and timelines.  Stop by the Career Development Center; she looks forward to working with you!

Jamie Arevalo, Marketing Coordinator

Jamie Arevalo came to Chapman University as the Marketing Coordinator for the Career Development Center in January of 2008.  Previously, Jamie worked at the City of Anaheim assisting the Communications Department in writing press releases, creating flyers, and developing campaigns for various residential and commercial programs. Jamie has studied Graphic design for over 7 years and graduated magna cum laude from California State University, Fullerton with a Bachelors degree in Communications: Advertising, and minors in American Studies and Business: Marketing. Her primary responsibilities at Chapman include designing creative campaigns to encourage students to use the services and resources of the CDC in developing their careers. She will also write the CDC e-newsletter, edit and develop material for the Web site, and produce office publications. She enjoys culinary arts, fashion, performing arts, fitness and karaoke.
